When they're human, I'd say either way is wrong.

Well spike becomes the cute, bit obsessive fangirl, instead of the slightly creepy, obsessive, infaturated young boy.

Since my OC is basically a ponification of myself, I wonder if humanizing my OC would give me a weird not-quite me, like a mistranslation when you go back and forth between two languages...
