Not sure if i should start such a thing but why not.. let's give it a shot.. Now im my opinion i do not think Starlight is a villian or evil.. She was just doing what she thought was right to maintain peace and order amongst her fellow ponies... Now i feel some of you will disagree and that's to be expected and that's fine.. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the matter as long as it's kept clean.. As one of my friends said(Psychicpie) there is no good or evil... just sides... this is my reason for this topic.. becuase i believe that is true for the most part.. i think there is evil and good but for the most part it is just sides.. Fighting for what they think is right... Now when you vote please explain your reason.. why.

Well, from my look on it, I honestly don't think what she was doing she even found to be right. I think it was just an act seeing from how she acted towards them after they got their cutie marks back. I think she just wanted to get as many people as possible to follow her, and had something more devious in mind. Even if she needed her magic to take away their marks, if she truly believed what she did was right, wouldn't she still take away her own mark? I think we'll end up seeing her again, after all, she did get away. Maybe we'll know later what her true intent was. Season closing perhaps?

That's the issue with the idealism of 'pure equality'.It looks justified at face value, but in practice its malformed. In the show its pretty obvious that she is to be the villain, with scheming to take the mane 6's marks, and also giving out punishments and social disownership to those who don't conform to her. She was doing what she thought was right, but that's the same as everyone who does 'evil' things.

Can't believe im defending Starlight Glimmer... huh. Im hoping this turns into a heated discussion c:

I respect your guys input but you need to remember she was only doing this because she thought it to be the best way to achieve true friendship... The cutie marks scared her and she thought it would cause problems as in fighting and ponies hurting each other through arguments.. She most likely never removed her cutie mark because she did need her magic to make the staff work. As for taking the mane 6's cutie marks she just wanted them to be equal too but her hidden reason was to show that a princess believed equality was a good thing and that it was the best for of friendship as she thought it would prevent jealousy among the ponies...I don't think this means she is evil.. It's not like she wanted to hurt anyone.. she just wanted ponies to be friends that were equals and had no reason to be jealous of each other.

I could tell from the get go that she's not evil.  From her outlook and the way she described natural friendship (as opposed to her definition of friendship), it seems that she's disillusioned.  It's a bit like those people who are disillusioned with capitalism and so tout the virtues of socialism or communism (Before anyone goes off on me, I'm not going to call her a communist.  If anything, she's a totalitarian and a demagogue who's cult of personality, while certainly reminiscent of communist leaders like Iosif Stalin and Kim Il-Sung, is not indicative of the system as a whole.).  Starlight sees the major flaws of Equestrian society, and thus rejects it and creates her own Utopia according to her vision.

However, why she didn't relinquish her own talent when everypony else was forced to give theirs up could be for any number of reasons.  One reason is that it is her special talent.  After all, when she's confronted by both the Mane 6 and her followers, she admits that the Staff of Sameness has no power, indicating that it was her alone who was removing those cutie marks.  Another possibility is, like other leaders with personality cults, she had her followers do as she said, but never followed her own rules.  For example (sorry to use the example of communism again), in the Soviet Union, wealth was regarded as the root of all evil, despite the fact that many government officials lived in luxury with modern appliances while the rest of the country still lived in the early 20th century.  By this logic, Starlight is abusing her position while thus ensuring that her power goes unchallenged.

It just feels too much like an act to me personally. I feel it's faked to just get people to follow her, and she has a bigger plan, like I said before. I hope we see a return of her, so we can maybe see later how she really felt.

It's hard to say. Believe it or not, I have no recollection at all of any pony characters ever being consistently evil*, albeit limited to broken memories of G1 and what I've seen in G4. I could see how having evil horses could affect the toy line which is probably why it hasn't been done. There are three possible outcomes I see. I'll list them from most to least likely:

  • The writers chicken out and have her reform, probably by ultimately separating her from the season's Bigger Bad.
  • She stays around as a recurring equine villain and is the ultimate Big Bad of the season.
  • She gets promoted to Alicorn, gets teamed up with an anti-six or non-equine villains, giving the main and primary supporting characters an ongoing and credible threat -- plus potential fodder for an ongoing story arc.

But yeah, my bet's on #1. Especially since #3 has had no actual setup evidence whatsoever. (Smooze has been downgraded from villain to clueless)

*Trixie is being represented as misunderstood. Mane-iac was a fictional character in the universe, thus doesn't count.

It's entirely possible that I only think this because my quota for epic showdowns was left unfulfilled by Tirek's lackluster performance, but I believe that Glimmer believes what she believes in order to hold power over others.  While I acknowledge that she never renounced her own ideology, nor mocked her ex-followers for believing it, I think that if she were truly interested in achieving total equality, she would have found a way to make it work.  Is it not too much of a stretch to assume that a unicorn-wizard of her prowess could enchant the Staff of Sameness to work as advertised?

I don't think she is evil, common guys give her a little space, a second chance, twighlit did and just look at how she has turned out... Guys there is two things to add to this, 1. The past is what makes us who we are. Starlight has been through a lot childhood and adult hood and only tried to make things better, she had good intentions. 2. Everyone deserves a second chance, all people, ponies, aliens, anything living and has a concous can change and be better. 3. (Sorry I had to add this 😂) The Bible says to love those who in return give you hate and and try to take advantage of you (I reworded it a little 😉) so yes this is why I believe she is good and I could go on and on so... try me!
